2023 Elections: NLC and the Labour Party Encourage Workers to Vote
In accordance with a previous decision of its National Executive Council, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership has ordered all employees to strive towards the success of the Labour Party in the general election.
This was said in a statement dated February 21, 2023 and signed by Comrade Chris Uyot, National Secretary of the NLC National Political Commission.
As a result, the NLC gave all of its political committee members in the states instructions to step up their efforts to encourage workers and Nigerians to support Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, and all other candidates running for office in the party.
Additionally, it charged the political committees with cooperating with students and their friends in civil society organizations to take all necessary measures to protect the public’s votes by guaranteeing an open, free, and fair election.
The NLC instructed all affiliated unions and State Councils of Congress to cooperate and support political committees as much as possible in order to strengthen their work at the state, local government, ward, and voting unit levels. They also instructed them to make sure that they provide at least 10 ward coordinators and canvassers in order to not only mobilize but also defend the electorate’s votes.
This is the whole statement:
Vote in the elections and back the Labour Party!
We would like to make reference to the resolution passed at the National Administrative Council (NAC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLCinaugural )’s meeting, which calls on all Nigerians, including workers, to cast their ballots in the upcoming elections and to take decisive action to protect their right to do so. The NLC had additionally encouraged the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee that the electoral processes were not only fair and transparent, but also took into account the preferences of the Nigerian people.
This is a rallying cry to all workers and working people to achieve high voter participation for the Labour Party’s victory in the upcoming presidential election on February 25, 2023, in accordance with a previous National Executive Council resolution (NEC).
To this aim, all members of the Labour Political Committee in the states are instructed to step up their efforts to encourage workers and Nigerians to support Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, as well as all other candidates running for office in the party.
Also, the political committees are urged to collaborate with our supporters in student organizations and civil society organizations to take all necessary measures to protect the public’s votes by ensuring that the electoral process is open, free, and fair.
All affiliate unions and State Councils of Congress must work together to the fullest extent possible to help the political committees strengthen their work at the state, local government, ward, and voting unit levels by ensuring that they provide at least 10 ward coordinators and canvassers to not only mobilize the people’s votes but also to defend them.
The past beckons. The outcome of this election could determine the future of our nation. It presents a chance to change the course of our political, social, and economic policies in order to adopt the Workers Charter of Demands’ people-oriented perspective.
Solidarity!
