a six-year-old student at Richneck Elementary School shot his Teacher
On Friday, a six-year-old student at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, shot and seriously injured a teacher in her 30s. The teacher’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening. No students were harmed in the incident. The student is currently in police custody and the shooting was not accidental, according to local police chief Steve Drew. The city’s superintendent of schools, George Parker, expressed shock and sadness about the incident.
“To ensure that youth do not have access to firearms, we need the community’s support.”
In the United States, school shootings are a common occurrence. One recent tragedy involved an 18-year-old gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, last May.
According to the Gun Violence Archive database, there were an estimated 44,000 gun-related deaths in the United States last year, with half of them coming from suicide and the other half from homicide, accidents, and self-defense.
