Nigerian top scorers in major European leagues for the 2022–2023 season
Some players born in Nigeria have performed well in their respective leagues during the 2022–2023 season in the main European top-flight football leagues.
Dailyupdates looks at Nigerian professional football players who are leading the goal charts in their various leagues, from Osimhen in Italy’s Napoli to Terem Moffi in France’s Ligue 1 and Taiwo Awoniyi in the English Premier League.
Nigerian Victor Osimhen has scored 13 goals in 15 games played this season, which is the most in the Serie A of Italy.
The 24-year-old Napoli striker has been in outstanding form this season and has three assists to his name.
In Napoli’s last five league games, the team’s leading scorer has scored four times, including a brace against Juventus in a thrilling 5-1 triumph.
He is rumored to be valued more than £100 million and is also connected to a potential summer transfer to Manchester United.
Teremas Igobor Moffi, better known by his stage as Terem Moffi, is the second-highest goal scorer among professional footballers from Nigeria so far this season. Moffi, a forward for Ligue 1 team Lorient, has scored 12 goals through 19 games thus far.
He now ranks second among Ligue 1 goal scorers after Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain, who now holds the top spot after 13 goals.
Moffi, a Nigerian international, is the only player to have scored once every 106 minutes so far in the new campaign. He scored twice against Clermont Foot and Lens before goals against Lyon and Auxerre.
The 23-year-old is now Lorient’s most expensive player.
Ademola Lookman, a football player from Nigeria, is ranked third but is actually second in Serie A this season in terms of goals scored with 11, just behind Victor Osimhen.
Lookman, an Atalanta winger, scored 11 goals during the course of his club’s 18 games. He has contributed three assists so far this season.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, who is not a Nigerian by birth but has Nigerian roots, is ranked fourth on our list. So far this season, the British-born Nigerian has eight goals and seven assists in 19 appearances for the Gunners. Saka, 21, is regarded as one of the world’s top young football players due to his offensive incisiveness and creativity.
Saka scored the Gunners’ second goal in Sunday’s dramatic triumph over Manchester United with a stunning left footed drive from outside the box to the bottom left corner.
He has shown to be a valuable asset to the North London side.
With four goals in 16 games this season, Taiwo Awoniyi is Nottingham Forest’s leading scorer.
The 25-year-old is tied for first place with colleague Brennan Johnson, who has four goals as well.
Awoniyi, on the other hand, has six goals in all competitions for Forest this season.
His efforts to the team have been superb this season, and his winning goal against Southampton earlier this month lifted Forest out of the Premier League relegation zone.
