On March 16, 2023, an Indian named Chandra Prakash Singh was charged with seven counts of theft involving more than $200,000 by the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, before Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. He entered a “not guilty” plea to the crime.

B.B. Bala, the prosecutor’s attorney, requested the defendant’s remand and a trial date in light of his plea.

Efe Solomon Izokor, the defendant’s attorney, urged the court to hear the bail request orally.

Bala disagreed with the defense’s argument and demanded that “a formal bail application be submitted before the court” so that she could respond appropriately.

Judge Oweibo ordered the defendant to remain in custody and postponed the case’s start date for the trial to June 27, 2023.
