Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, has pledged to expand the Calabar port as part of initiatives to encourage trade in the nation’s South-South region.

In his speech to the voters in Cross River State on Monday during the PDP presidential campaign rally at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, he made the pledge.

While vowing to connect the state with other regions of the nation through the construction of road infrastructure, he said he will also ensure the construction of rail lines from Lagos through Calabar to Port Harcourt.

“If you open up the Calabar port, it will generate a ton of commerce and provide the people of Cross River State with significant opportunity. Another thing you should know is that once the Calabar port is developed and operational, it would attract enterprises and manufacturers, which will help the citizens of Cross River State.

“This is just one; once more, the potentials for agriculture will increase. Therefore, the development of Calabar Port alone will present many opportunities for the people of Cross River, and I assure you that if you vote for PDP for president and governor, we will cooperate with your governors and legislators to carry out this APC-rejected agenda.

The subject of infrastructure development, according to Atiku, “involves first and foremost the road networks linking you with neighboring states and second and foremost the proposed train connection from Lagos through Calabar to Port Harcourt.”
