As Manchester United and struggling Southampton draw, Casemiro sees red.
Casemiro was dismissed as Southampton held Manchester United to a scoreless draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Third-placed United were forced to settle for a dreary 0-0 draw as a result of the midfielder’s punishment.
Although United had gone undefeated in their last 22 home games, this was a lackluster showing in their first league game since suffering a humbling 7-0 loss to fierce rivals Liverpool the previous weekend.
Erik ten Hag’s team struggled to maintain a point after Casemiro was dismissed in the 34th minute as they appeared worn out after defeating Real Betis in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 on Thursday.
Following a VAR review, the Brazil midfielder’s original caution for a high challenge on Carlos Alcaraz was upgraded to a red card.
With his red card against Crystal Palace, it was the former Real Madrid player’s second dismissal in eight games, and he now faces a four-match suspension.
“In more than 500 games in Europe, Casemiro never received a red card. He now has two in the Premier League, according to Ten Hag.
The problem is not his absence. We’ll take care of that. The referee had an impact on this game.
Despite their valiant draw, Southampton are still at the bottom of the standings.
