Buhari Approves Three More Bills and 16 Constitutional Amendment Bills
19 Legislation that support Section 58(4) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution have received the president’s assent.
16 of these measures are constitutional amendments to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, according to a statement by Senator Babajide Omoworare, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Issues (Senate) (as amended).
The assented Constitutional Alteration Bills, among other things, ensure the financial independence of state houses of assembly and state judiciaries, regulate the first session and inauguration of members-elect of the national and state houses of assembly, and address related issues. They also make sure that the president and governors submit the names of people nominated as ministers or commissioners for confirmation by the Senate within sixty days of taking office.
Others include allowing states to produce, transmit, and distribute electricity in regions serviced by the national grid, as well as for related issues; excluding the time for intervening events when calculating the amount of time needed to decide pre-election petitions, etc.; regulating the first session and inauguration of members-elect of national and state assemblies; converting prisons to correctional facilities and redesignating correctional facilities in the concurrent list; and relocating correctional facilities.
The Federal Medical Centers (Amendment) Acts, the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Scientific Technology Act, and the Nigerian Institute of International Relations Act, according to Senator Omoworare, were also signed by the president.
