2023 Election
Elections in the Rivers LGA are postponed by INEC due to a lack of electoral materials distribution.
When voters in the Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State insisted on seeing the electoral officers and collation officers, the elections for governor and the state house of representatives were postponed.
The absence of INEC EOs and Outcome Sheets reportedly sparked a contentious argument at the RAC Center in Buguma, the seat of the Asari-Toru Local Government.
Security personnel had to work hard to keep the voters under control because they insisted on seeing INEC EOs and Outcome Sheets before materials could leave the RAC Center.
Channels Television observed INEC Adhoc Employees returning voting materials during their visit to the INEC office in Buguma.
When approached, a non-identifiable INEC Assistant Electoral Officer (Operations) in the LGA quickly directed Channels Television Correspondent to the INEC Headquarters in Port Harcourt, claiming that the Commission’s official position on the elections in the LGA could only come from the Head Office.
Asari-Toru and portions of Degema LGA polls have been postponed, according to INEC Chief of Voter Education, Mike Usolo, since voting materials could not be supplied in those areas.
Voters in Asari-Toru who insisted on seeing collation officers were wrong, according to Mike Usolo, who said that INEC has yet to set a date for the polls in those areas. Collation officers are only visible at Collation Centers, not RAC Centers.
