Chelsea’s next January transfer decision is already underway following Mykhailo Mudryk deal
Chelsea have been busy in the transfer window with Paul Winstanley and Behdad Eghbali moving to complete a deal for Mykhailo Mudryk at the weekend but the Blues transfer business is not done yet
There is little indication that Chelsea’s hectic month will slow down, and with only two weeks left in the January transfer market, there isn’t much time to waste. Mykhailo Mudryk was rapidly acquired by the Blues over the weekend from Arsenal, but it doesn’t seem like the deal is finalized just yet.
On Monday, it was revealed that movement had already taken place, although within Chelsea’s roster’s loan division. After spending time on loan at Peterborough United, Lucas Bergstrom returned. The 20-year-old, who made his international debut for Finland earlier this month, has been Posh’s first choice goalkeeper throughout this campaign, but it seems the Blues have lost confidence in him since the League One club recruited Will Norris.
Darren Ferguson, manager of Peterborough, said: “Chelsea wanted him back because they believed he wouldn’t play enough, which is OK. I justified my choice to invite Will Norris in. You could see the calm he brought tonight. To play a complete season as a young goalkeeper is a big ask. Lucas will benefit greatly from Chelsea’s surprise and satisfaction at how much he played.”
Following the loan exits of Eddie Beach and Teddy Sharman-Lowe, the Blues have a lot of options for what to do with Bergstrom, including sending the youngster back out on loan or keeping him to rotate with Gabriel Slonina in the development squad. He may also improve Chelsea’s Champions League seeding because he would be eligible for Chelsea’s B list if they were to cut Marcus Bettinelli to make place for a new outfield player.
Dailyupdates reported last week that Harvey Vale was returning to west London, but the deal has not yet been officially announced. On Monday, the teenage winger appeared to confirm the move by posting to his Instagram story. He said: “Best of luck for the rest of the season Hull City. Thank you.”
But Xavier Simons and Nathan Baxter, two of his Chelsea teammates in Hull, are also awaiting word on their future. Despite the Championship club’s option to make his transfer permanent in the summer, the latter has had trouble with injuries and may return to the Blues.
Since Simons hasn’t accrued many minutes this year, Liam Rosenoir’s team is interested in trying to sign him permanently but may struggle to convince their on-loan midfielder. especially in light of the interest from a number of other clubs.
Silko Thomas appears to be on trial with Sheffield United, while Mason Burstow is attracting interest for a potential loan following a strong comeback in Premier League 2.
Even after spending more than £400 million, the Blues’ budget still appears to have money for first-team considerations. Right back and center midfielder are still top priorities for Chelsea’s upcoming acquisitions.
Enzo Fernandez was unsuccessfully recruited by Chelsea at their first try, but Moises Caicedo of Brighton might be next. However, as evidenced by the Mudryk agreement, priorities can shift very quickly if an opportunity or necessity presents itself.
Despite the completion of the deal for Mudryk, it is understood that Chelsea will continue to speak with PSV’s Noni Madueke over the weekend. PSV does not want to sell after parting ways with Cody Gakpo, but technical director Christopher Vivell is pressing for the winger to leave for a cost around £40 million.
It looks like Graham Potter has already put a stop to Conor Gallagher leaving the team this month. Although Newcastle United and Crystal Palace were interested in a loan agreement, Chelsea’s manager wants to keep Gallagher, whose goal is to merely accumulate minutes.
