AFCON winners will receive $7 million as the CAF increases prize money.
The prize money for the champions of the 2023 Africain Football Championship in Cote d’Ivoire will now be $7 million instead of the previous $5 million, according to an announcement made by the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF).
The organization released a statement on Tuesday announcing the 40% hike.
Additionally, it said that the 2023 AFCON Côte d’Ivoire runner-up will now get $4 million. $2.5 million will go to each of the two semi-finalists and $1.3 million to each of the four quarter-finalists.
Patrice Motzepe, President of CAF, expressed confidence that the rise will contribute to the growth of football on the continent.
“Over the past two years, CAF has made significant progress in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all of its other major competitions,” the speaker stated. The prize money for the AFCON winner has been upped to USD 7,000,000, a 40% increase over the previous amount.
“I have no doubt that a portion of the Prize Money will help our Member Associations with their administrative needs and also help to develop football for the benefit of all football stakeholders.”
At the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea will play the opening match of AFCON 2023 on Saturday, January 13.
