Buhari departs for the Addis Abeba AU Summit

Today (Thursday), President Muhammadu Buhari will leave Abuja for Addis Abe, Ethiopia, to attend the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU).

Buhari will take part in three high-level meetings while he is in Addis Abeba, according to a statement from Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

The theme of the summit is “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation,” according to the release.

Shenu added that on the fringes of the Meeting, Buhari would be attending an emergency summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.

The President will take part in three High Level Meetings on Peace and Security, Climate Change, and the Political Situation in Some West African Countries, according to the release.

First up is the Heads of State and Government meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) on the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (AUPSC High Level AU), which will be presided over by the President of South Africa in his capacity as the Council’s Chair for the month of February, it was noted.
