Sam Sodje, a former Nigerian defender, stated that the Super Eagles must improve their defense and that they will require a strong defense to win the next 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, according to DAILYUPDATES Sports Extra.

According to Sodje, head coach Jose Peseiro selected an uneven Eagles team for the AFCON competition, which is set to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.

In addition to being favored to win the title, the Eagles are one of the favorites to advance from Group A with hosts Ivory Coast.

Sodje, a former Nigerian defender, had doubts about the team’s stability, claiming that only one position on the team had competent players.

“We are bringing too many strikers to the AFCON, and we lack that creativity in the midfield, where players can pass the ball forward and create chances to win games,” Sodje stated. “We are going to the AFCON with an imbalance squad.”

“With due respect to the players, we are using far too many side passes, and as a result, we are giving up goals left, right, and center. We ought to cease doing it as winning a tournament requires playing strong defense.

Sodje, who played five games for the Eagles, is likewise concerned about the national team’s goalkeeping dilemma.

It’s also common knowledge that our goalkeeping department is having issues. Thus, when you add all of this together, you have cause for concern, but we will continue to support the Super Eagles because we are fans,” he said.
