Former Chairman of the ICPC Ayoola Dies at 91

Emmanuel Ayoola, a previous head of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC), passed away.

The announcement of Ayoola’s passing was made in a statement on Wednesday by Musa Aliyu, the ICPC Chairman.

It was reported on Tuesday that Ayoola, the second chairman of the ICPC, passed away at the age of ninety-one.

He was the Chairman of the Commission from 2005 till 2010, taking over from Mustapha Akanbi.

Ayoola performed a variety of services for Nigeria. After being appointed to a high court in 1976, he advanced through the ranks to the position of Supreme Court justice.

In 2003, he retired from the nation’s highest court as a justice after reaching the obligatory retirement age of 70.

Ayoola was born in Ilesha, Osun State, on October 27, 1933. He completed his elementary education at Temidire Model School from 1939 to 1943 and his intermediate school at Ilesha Grammar School from 1944 to 1950.

The deceased jurist graduated from law school in 1957.

He attended a number of universities, including Oxford University London and the University of London.

Ayoola was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to the position of judge of the special court for Sierra Leone’s appeals chamber.

During the civil conflict in Sierra Leone, a court was established to trial people guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. From 2004 to 2005, he presided over the court as president.

In 2003, Ayoola received the Nigerian National Honor of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in recognition of his distinguished service to humanity and Nigeria.
