In Nsukka, the owner of a barbershop was electrocuted while vandalizing a transformer (video)
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, confirmed that a barber was electrocuted while vandalizing a transformer in Nsukka.
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 14, 2023, in Ede-Oballa, Enugu State’s Nsukka Local Government Area.
Tochukwu Onah (alias Toshiba), an indigene of the community, was identified as the deceased by the company.
Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, told reporters in Enugu on Sunday that the incident was very unfortunate and had taken the young man’s life.
Mr Ezeh stated that the suspect’s body was discovered in the early hours of Saturday within the space of an EEDC distribution transformer in Ede-Oballa community, Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State.
He claimed that Onah was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize the distribution transformer, which had already had some of its cables severed.
Mr Ezeh recalled the company’s numerous cases of vandalism in 2022, which had a negative impact not only on the quality of service to its customers, but also on revenue.
As a result, he urged the public to look inward, as some of the perpetrators of these attacks may live in the neighborhood or community.
Mr Ezeh recalled a similar incident in November 2022, when a transformer vandal died in the same Ede-Oballa community.
According to him, vandalism has been a significant challenge for the company, and it cannot deal with it alone without the support of its stakeholders.
Mr Ezeh also stated that in all of the arrests, none of the suspects had been identified as employees of the company, nor had any of the suspects been apprehended or claimed to be working or colluding with any employee of the company.
“EEDC expresses condolences to the deceased’s family and hopes that this incident serves as a deterrent to those who engage in this act of sabotage and wickedness of putting an entire neighborhood or community in total darkness,” he added.
