January 27 is Sylvester Oromoni’s burial date.
The late Sylvester Oromoni Jr., a 12-year-old student at Dowen College, has set January 27, 2024, for his funeral.
The family released a statement on Monday, January 22. It says:
“As a family, we have decided to say goodbye to Sylvester on Saturday, January 27, 2024, with final rites to be held at Ogbe-Ijaw Warri Kingdom, Delta state. We are still in deep sadness over this senseless death.
Sylvester Oromoni Jr., our 12-year-old son, was a student at Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos State. His death was controversially announced exactly two years ago on November 30, 2021, after he was tortured to death by some senior students who wanted to initiate him into a cult group. To this day, our family has not received justice in this matter.
Born on December 4, 2009, Sylvester experienced a tragic end on November 30, 2021, when he passed away from injuries sustained in a terrifying attack by classmates.
Sylvester was well known for his extraordinary intelligence and maturity for his age before his tragic death. A bright young man with a great deal of promise, he impressed everyone he came into contact with with his outstanding sense of humor and initiative. Sylvester stands out for his voracious appetite for knowledge, especially in the areas of computer science, programming, and electrical science. He also has a keen interest in football.
His passing has left an unfillable hole in the lives of those who love him and us as a family, but his legacy will live on in the unforgettable recollections of the significant influence he had on everyone who knew him.
We as a family want everyone to honor Sylvester’s memory by remembering the positive energy that filled their lives and by appreciating the intelligence that gleamed from his youthful mind, even as we continue to grieve for our son. We will not stop calling for justice for our darling son who was brutally murdered by other classmates, even while the community grieves the loss of this bright student,” the statement read.
The Lagos state government held a coroner’s investigation into Sylvester’s death following his tragic passing, and the inquest’s findings is scheduled to be released to the public on April 12, 2024.
