Colombia 2024: Japan Knocks Falconets Out of World Cup
In a thrilling Round of 16 clash at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2024, Japan triumphed over Nigeria 2-1 on a rainy day in Bogotá. This victory secured Japan’s place in the quarterfinals, where they will face Spain in a highly anticipated rematch of the 2022 championship.
Japan, always in control, took the lead in the 33rd minute with a well-placed header from Miyu Matsunaga, set up by Rihona Ujihara. Despite Nigeria’s efforts, Japan maintained their dominance through most of the match, showing the attacking precision that has marked their tournament.
In the second half, Maya Hijikata extended Japan’s lead by finishing a cross from substitute Chinari Sasai, bringing her goal tally to match Brazil’s Vendito in the race for the Adidas Golden Boot. Although Olushola Shobowale gave Nigeria hope with a late goal, it wasn’t enough, and Japan held on for a deserved 2-1 victory.
This win sets up an exciting quarterfinal clash between Japan and Spain, rekindling the rivalry from their 2022 final matchup.
