Osimhen scores his league-leading 21st goal as Napoli keep winning in March

The Italian champions-elect Napoli thrashed Torino 4-0 and increased their lead over second-placed Torino to a massive 21 points. Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were once again the heroes for Napoli.

With two spectacular headers in each half and a Kvaratskhelia penalty in the 35th minute in between, Nigerian attacker Osimhen increased his league-leading goal total to 21.

Following excellent hold-up work by Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia then assisted Tanguy Ndombele’s first Serie A goal in the 68th minute as Napoli advanced toward winning its first league championship since 1990 in front of a raucous Turin crowd.

After a highway altercation with Roma fans in January, a two-month travel restriction was lifted, and this was their first away game since.

And they were present to witness their club’s normally commanding performance. If Simone Inzaghi’s uneven team defeats Juventus in Sunday’s crucial encounter, Napoli would at worst be 18 points clear of Inter Milan with 11 games remaining.

Yet, Napoli will soon secure a historic title victory after a season of stunning football that has Osimhen sure they can also capture the Champions League.

To advance to the final, they would need to defeat AC Milan in an Italian derby in the quarterfinals and possibly Inter in the last four, but it would be difficult to wager against a squad that appears to have captured lightning in a bottle and then used it to fry everything in its path.

After Kvaratskhelia scored his 14th goal of the year, Torino gave little resistance and fell to 11th place, level on points with Bologna and ninth-place Fiorentina, who defeated Lecce 1-0 in their seventh straight game across all competitions.

With both goals in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over fellow struggling Verona, Manolo Gabbiadini earlier provided Sampdoria optimism that they might still avoid relegation from Serie A.

In the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, forward Gabbiadini scored twice in the opening period to enable Samp earn their first victory since January and move up the standings, from last position to nineteenth.

Spezia, who are now in the bottom half of the table and lost 1-0 against Sassuolo on Friday, are nine points behind Dejan Stankovic’s team. Gabbiadini scored both goals, with the first coming in the 24th and the second coming in the 11th minute.

Verona, who sit one spot and four points ahead of Samp, scored a consolation goal in the 88th minute, but the hosts got one back in stoppage time through Alessandro Zanoli.
