Port Harcourt Unrest Due to Naira Exchange Policy

Friday saw some Rivers State citizens demonstrate in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital, against the Federal Government’s monetary policies and the lack of available naira notes.

The Mile Three Market, located along Ikwerre Road in Port Harcourt City Loca Government Area, was the focal point.

A few minutes later, however, the protest became violent as hoodlums who are always present in the market area grabbed the chance to forcibly evict individuals from their property.

Moreover, stores were burglarized, and automobiles’ windshields were broken on the streets.

The hoodlums were claimed to have injured drivers and bystanders as well.

Due to the unpleasant incident, businesses in the formerly popular area have shut down, and the road is now vacant due to concerns that the protest may get worse.

The Rivers State Police command has not yet commented on the matter; calls and texts to Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko remained unanswered, and the text message from the Commissioner of Police had the statement “I can’t discuss now.”

Although we are unable to confirm whether it is connected to the current disturbance, a meeting between the CP and the Naval Commander is still going on as of the time this report is being filled out.

In a press conference yesterday, Governor Nyesom Wike urged calm in the state, stressing the significance of residents maintaining the state’s safety.
