Remove Dead Voters From the Register, Representatives Tell INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been requested by the House of Representatives to create a procedure to remove deceased people from the voter list.

Following a member’s motion of urgent national importance calling attention to what he described as irregularities seen during the general elections of 2023, the House adopted this resolution.

The motion’s sponsor, Abejide, claimed that the INEC register had his deceased father’s name.

Additionally, the lawmakers urged the electoral commission to deregister any voter who fails to cast a ballot for two general elections.

The National Assembly clerk was earlier instructed by the House to send President Muhammadu Buhari the bill for a constitutional amendment that would establish a uniform retirement age for judges and pension benefits.

The House made its judgment after the Sokoto State House of Assembly passed the bill, fulfilling the requirements of Section 9(2) of the constitution for two-thirds approval of state assemblies.

The representatives also asked the state houses of assembly in Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kwara, Plateau, and Taraba to move forward with their resolutions on the bill.

If the President signs the constitutional amendment, it will raise the high court judges’ retirement age from 65 to 70 years.
