Shaqiri Ends His Career in Switzerland
After earning 125 caps for his country, Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri declared his retirement from international football on Monday.
With 130 caps, Swiss midfielder Shaqiri, 32, is second only to teammate Granit Xhaka in the country’s cap total. He currently plays for the Chicago Fire in the United States.
The 18-year-old former player for Bayern Munich and Liverpool made his debut for his country in March 2010. He competed for his nation in three European Championships and four World Cups.
After a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2024 quarterfinal in Duesseldorf on July 6, England defeated Switzerland 5-3 on penalties in what turned out to be Shaqiri’s final match for the National team.
“14 years with the Swiss national team, seven tournaments, countless goals, and priceless moments.” It’s time to bid the national team farewell. Great memories endure, and I express my gratitude to each and every one of you,” the winger wrote in social media posts.
With 32 goals, Shaqiri finishes as Switzerland’s fourth-highest scorer, trailing only Alexander Frei (42 goals) and Kubilay Turkyilmaz and Max Abegglen (34 goals each).
