Sports Minister Announces Asaba as the Opening of the 8th National Youth Games
The Eighth National Youth Games have officially begun at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s sports landscape. John Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, highlighted the critical role these games play in revitalizing the nation’s sports sector.
Enoh spoke during the opening ceremony, emphasizing that grassroots sports development is key to nurturing young athletes and elevating Nigeria’s position in the global sports arena. He underscored the importance of fostering future champions and promoting national unity through these competitions.
The Minister stressed that sports not only drive revenue but also promote peace, strengthen international relations, and enhance diplomatic efforts. He noted that the current administration, led by His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is committed to optimizing the sports sector to align with its vision for renewed hope.
Looking ahead to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Enoh called for a renewed focus on grassroots development. He advocated for a comprehensive framework that supports athletes from their initial stages to elite levels, emphasizing that this goes beyond mere talent identification.
Enoh praised Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his unwavering support of grassroots sports, particularly in the face of challenges in organizing such a large-scale event. This year’s National Youth Games feature a record-breaking 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials, the largest number ever recorded for the event.
The Minister also expressed gratitude to the Federal Capital Territory’s Minister and the governors of participating states for their continuous sponsorship and support. He encouraged athletes to compete fairly and adhere to the rules, fostering a spirit of fair play throughout the games.
“This is a prime opportunity to advance athlete development for the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and to set new world records,” Enoh concluded.
