Todd Boehly makes major Chelsea transfer decision amid planned contract talks for £98m duo

Following the close of the January transfer window, contract extension discussions for current Chelsea players Mason Mount and Edouard Mendy are expected to continue. After officially announcing the acquisition of Mykhailo Mudryk for £88 million on a seven-and-a-half-year contract with an option to extend by a further 12 months, the Blues appear to be prioritizing additional prospective signings in the next weeks of the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old joined Joao Felix, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, and David Datro Fofana as Chelsea’s fifth January signings. Graham Potter also brought in Joao Felix, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, and David Datro Fofana. After Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s acquisition of the club in May 2022, 2023 appears to be a crucial year for it.

After spending close to £300million in the summer, the priority has clearly been on bringing new players to the club with current members of the squad somewhat neglected when it comes to discussing new contracts.

N’Golo Kante and Jorginho’s contracts were major topics of conversation this year because both of their current contracts were set to expire in the summer. Although Kante has made progress, Jorginho appears to be entering his final season at Stamford Bridge despite interest from Napoli and Newcastle.

It’s crucial to reach contract extensions with players whose contracts have a short remaining duration in order to secure their long-term future and that of the team. Mendy and Mount are the pair that now best fits the category; their current contracts will expire in 2025 and 2024, respectively.

Talks had stalled for both players since Kepa Arrizabalaga was now Graham Potter’s first choice goalkeeper and Mendy was maybe not in the ideal position to negotiate after picking up a new injury. Prior to the World Cup, Mount reportedly refused a new contract extension worth £200,000 a week, according to the Daily Mail.

His evolving contract situation was being monitored by both Liverpool and Juventus, and it appeared that talks would go on after the World Cup. That deadline has already been further delayed as the Blues concentrate on their January transfer transaction.

The Evening Standard claims that negotiations for Mount and Mendy’s new contracts have been postponed until after the January transfer window, with only Kante’s contract renewal making any headway. This is due to the fact that Chelsea’s attention is still on incomings.

Following Mudryk’s identification of three players as the likely remaining targets, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, through Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, confirmed those allegations by stating the Blues are still actively recruiting in January.

“Chelsea’s business is not over with the arrival of Mudryk. Moises Caicedo, Marcus Thuram, and Noni Madueke are still being investigated “said he.
