Transfer rumors: Inter Luk will sign Romelu away from Chelsea.
Romelu Lukaku’s permanent transfer from Chelsea to Inter Milan is about to happen.
He returned for a second stint at Stamford Bridge after winning the Serie A with Inter in 2021, only to last season return to the San Siro on loan.
We examine what it will take to complete the deal since the Nerazzurri have already had two offers for the striker this summer rejected.
Chelsea price
Both Inter’s initial proposal of £23 million and a purportedly upgraded offer of £26 million for Lukaku were reportedly turned down.
Chelsea is reportedly holding out for £40 million after having already ruled out the possibility of letting the forward sign a new loan agreement.
Although that price tag may appear high for a goal scorer who just turned 30 years old, it is important to keep in mind that the West Londoners only paid £97.5 million to bring him back to Stamford Bridge two years ago.
When they have received money from a significant sale, Inter might be able to complete the trade because they are not too far from the Blues’ asking price.
Andre Onana, the goalkeeper, has agreed to a deal to join Manchester United for a reported £47 million.
Other potential suitors
This summer, clubs other than Inter are reportedly interested in signing Lukaku.
If Dusan Vlahovic leaves Turin, he has been mentioned as a potential Dusan Vlahovic replacement at Juventus.
Al-Hilal, a Saudi Arabian club also rumored to be in the running, has reportedly made a three-year contract offer to the Belgian international for £26 million each season.
Consequently, Inter is under pressure to finalize a transaction because Lukaku is once again in demand despite having a very inconsistent season in 2022–2023.
Due to injuries, the striker missed the majority of the first half of the season, and his poor performance for Belgium at the 2022 World Cup served as a cruel capstone.
However, in the last weeks, he recovered his form, scoring seven goals and providing assists in his final seven Serie A games.
That period undoubtedly had a significant role in Inter’s decision to purchase Lukaku, but it also insured that Chelsea would have competition and would be able to demand a high asking price.
Lukaku aspire
The fact that Lukaku adores the team is Inter’s best chance of closing this deal.
He made it known that he had not wanted to leave the Nerazzurri and that he hoped to one day join them again shortly after leaving the San Siro to join Chelsea in 2021.
He apologized profusely to the Inter supporters, saying that he felt his departure should have been handled differently.
“From the bottom of my heart, I really want to go back to Inter, not at the end of my career, but at a good level to hopefully win more.”
It might take some more time, and outside interest could make things more difficult, but it appears as though Lukaku will achieve his wish to stay at Inter for good.
He might also win the trophy he longs for because Simone Inzaghi’s team is the favorite to win Serie A the following season.
