The teenage Thai football team’s coach, who gained international notoriety while they were stranded in a cave for almost three weeks, is now facing yet another difficult situation: flash floods have left him locked on his roof.

Ekkapol Chantawong, who lives in the Mae Sai neighborhood of northern Thailand, told AFP on Wednesday that he was using his 2018 experience with the “Wild Boars” team to help him go through his most recent ordeal.

Typhoon Yagi’s days of unrelenting rain have caused deadliest landslides and flash floods across northern Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar.

Ekkapol told AFP over the phone that the floodwaters in his village unexpectedly surged early on Tuesday morning, giving him and his family no time to flee.

He soon found himself forced onto his home’s roof by the steadily rising waters, where he spent Tuesday night with his girlfriend and her aunt.

“Even though I was afraid, I forced myself to remain composed. He said, “Assess the situation and wait.”

According to him, the waters have lowered enough for Ekkapol to reach the ground level of the house, but they are unable to depart because the outside current is still too strong.

After a daring international rescue mission, Ekkapol and his “Wild Boars” team, who had been stranded in the Tham Luang cave complex for nearly three weeks due to flash floods, emerged to worldwide acclaim.

He claimed that the cave experience had given him insights that he might use in his current situation.

It’s not different, in my opinion. We must first concentrate and begin resolving the issue at hand,” he remarked.

“This stranding does not feel like extra pressure to me. I perceive a clearer path out.

When asked if he had a third experience like this in mind, Ekkapol chuckled and said, “It’s hard to say.” I really hope I don’t have to climb up on the roof again tonight, but we never know what will happen.
