Wendie Renard, the captain of France, has declared that she will not compete in this summer’s Women’s World Cup because she is dissatisfied with the team’s organizational structure; Renard: “It’s a sad day but a necessary one to protect my mental health.
Wendie Renard, the captain of France, has declared that she will not participate in the 2018 Women’s World Cup in order to “protect her mental health.”


With 142 appearances and 34 goals for the team, Renard is arguably France’s best female football player.
She has also been successful in domestic football, helping Lyon win eight Champions League titles and 15 league championships.

Renard said she no longer felt capable of competing for the national team, but refrained from declaring her retirement.

I love France more than anything, and while I am far from perfect, I posted a statement on social media saying, “I can no longer accept the current system which is far away from the demands required at the highest level.

“It’s a sad day, but one I need to have in order to safeguard my mental health. I’m sending you this message to let you know that I’ve decided to step down as a member of the France team.

“Unfortunately, under these circumstances, I won’t participate in the World Cup.”
