Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that he will not oppose Governor of Benue State Samuel Ortom’s bid for the Senate.

For the Benue North-West senatorial district in the elections of 2023, Ortom is the PDP contender.

The G5 is a group of five governors, and Ortom is one of them. The G5 has been adamantly opposed to Atiku Abubakar, the party’s nominee for president, citing what it deems a need for fairness, equity, and justice.

Ayu has not resigned despite the G5’s insistence that the same area cannot produce both the party’s presidential candidate and national chairman. Stuck in the middle of an internal conflict brought on by Atiku’s victory in the PDP’s May 2022 presidential primary.

The conflict appeared to have peaked last month when the governor of Benue endorsed Peter Obi, the front-runner for the Labour Party’s presidential nomination.

On Thursday, the PDP chairman told media at his Makurdi home that he would not oppose Ortom “since he is a candidate of the party.”

He urged Nigerians to take stock of the difficult eight years, which have seen poverty, insecurity, and economic failures rise.

He believes that supporting Atiku might drastically alter the course of the nation.

The PDP chairman urged voters to choose the country’s survival and claimed that the PDP must step in to save it.

Gabriel Suswam, Emmanuel Oker-Jev, and Abba Moro, the three senators from Benue who are in the National Assembly, have all endorsed Atiku and distanced themselves from Ortom’s campaign to support Obi.
