Why Lagos aviation workers are on strike – Unions

On Monday, January 23, 2023, aviation employees went on an indefinite strike under the leadership of the National Union of Air Transport Employees and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria.

According to Dailyupdates, international flights at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos were canceled on Monday morning as a result of a strike by employees of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc.

The Deputy General Secretary of ATSSSA, Frances Akinjole, and the General Secretary of NUATE, Ochema Aba, signed the strike notice dated January 16 and indicated that negotiations with NAHCO management for a review of employees’ remuneration allegedly failed.

“As you are all aware, since June 2022, our unions have been in unsuccessful negotiations with NAHCO management regarding a reassessment of present compensation. We have come to the conclusion that the management is clearly unwilling to heed our cries for fairness and equity, despite overwhelming evidence supporting our demand, as all ultimatum issued by our unions have gone unheeded and the management continues to play on our intelligence by scheduling pointless meetings.

“In view of the above, NUATE and ATSSSAN have no choice than to take definite steps to press home our demands.

“In the above regard, all workers of NAHCO are hereby directed to withdraw all services with effect from Monday. This action shall be indefinite until otherwise directed by the secretariats of the unions,” the notice read.
