The NHRC chief is proposed for reappointment by President Buhari.

Anthony Ojukwu’s nomination for re-appointment as the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission has been confirmed by President Buhari in writing to the Senate.

The re-appointment is for five years, and it would be Ojuku’s final tenure in the job, according to the letter that Senate President Ahmad Lawan read aloud in the plenary on Tuesday.

According to Section 7(2) of the National Human Rights Commission (Amendment) Act of 2010, the letter states: “Mr. Anthony Ojukwu, SAN, has been nominated for reappointment as the executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission for a final term of five years. I write to forward this nomination to the Senate for confirmation.

“Although it is my sincere hope that the Senate would quickly evaluate and approve the appointment. Please appreciate my utmost consideration and that of the Honorable Senate President.

The president also requested confirmation of the nomination of Hon. Justice Stanley Lawal as the actual President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Abuja, in a separate letter dated February 1, 2023.

According to the president, the confirmation is in accordance with Section 266(1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (Amended).

“I am glad to send the designation of Hon. Justice Stanley, Adekunle Lawal, the Acting President of the Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as the substantive President of the court for confirmation by the senate,” the letter states.

“I am certain that the Senate will evaluate and approve the candidate with the customary promptness. Please accept my greatest consideration and my promises, Honorable Senate President.
