USA goalkeeper Steffen departs from Man City to play with the Rapids in Major League Soccer.

The Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer announced on Thursday that goalkeeper Zack Steffen, an international player for the United States, has signed a three-year contract to join the team from Manchester City.

Over the course of four seasons, Steffen, a backup at City, made 21 appearances for the Premier League team, mostly in cup games.

The 28-year-old played on loan for Middlesbrough of the English Championship and Fortuna Dusseldorf of Germany.

With 29 appearances for his country, Steffen will be looking to regular football back home to help him regain a starting spot before the USA, along with Mexico and Canada, co-hosts the 2026 World Cup.

“We are overjoyed to welcome Zack to the club. We are confident that he will greatly benefit our group because he is a quality player with extensive experience. Chris Armas, head coach of the Rapids, stated, “His caliber, leadership, and winning mindset will benefit us for years to come.

In 2018, Steffen, who started his career with Columbus Crew, was chosen as the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

Armas was named the new head coach of the Rapids in November after the squad placed 28th out of 29 teams in the final rankings.
