Edo 2024: Edo Elders Endorse Okpebholo’s Candidacy, Pledge Support

Edo elders have thrown their full support behind Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the upcoming Edo State elections, vowing to ensure his victory.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the elders emphasized the need for a governor who prioritizes public education, health, and the environment, and who is committed to the welfare of women, youth, and the elderly. They praised Okpebholo for understanding the economic challenges faced by Edo voters and promised to support his election campaign wholeheartedly. “We are going to make sure that he is elected governor. This is the project of the Edo people. God willing, we shall succeed,” they declared.

Describing Okpebholo as the embodiment of a new vision for Edo State, the elders highlighted his commitment to transparency, accountability, and prudent management of resources. They called on voters to reject political extremism, ineffective leadership, and administrative incompetence.

“Senator Monday Okpebholo’s vision is virtually limitless. He will build structures for real, concrete development, translate our hopes into viable reality, and fight for an honest, transparent government. He will protect the interests of Edo people, build the state’s infrastructure, appoint representatives from all senatorial zones, and create an environment conducive to business growth,” the statement read.

Chief Efua Abudu, Chairman of the Edo Elders Forum (EEF), criticized the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for failing to advance the state’s development. He argued that Edo State needs a leader with vision and innovative solutions to address its developmental challenges. “Senator Monday Okpebholo has the exposure, education, and vision to take Edo State to the next level of development,” Abudu stated.

Okpebholo, who entered the gubernatorial race to attract investment and address infrastructure gaps, is seen as a strong contender against opponents Ighodalo and Akpata. The elders highlighted his commitment to fostering economic growth, creating jobs, improving civil service conditions, and ensuring inclusive governance. He has also pledged to reserve 35 percent of appointments for women.
