According to Imo REC, assembly elections would be held in insecure areas.

The upcoming state Assembly elections in Imo State’s local governments will take place, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, Prof Sylvia Uchenna Agu, expressed her desire to deploy both personnel and electoral materials to the areas affected by insecurity in the state, such as Orlu, Orsu, and Oru East L.G.As., during a stakeholders’ meeting called to review the presidential/National Assembly elections in the state with a view to tackling challenges that arose.

To ensure a successful election, he urged with the elected officials to work with the commission.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and its NATO counterparts were held responsible by the REC for breaking a previous agreement with INEC about the presidential/National Assembly elections.

Stakeholders recommended Prof. Agu to include private transporters in their plans as well to prevent last-minute disappointment. Prof. Agu had invited the stakeholders to recommend strategies for guaranteeing smooth polls on Saturday.

They suggested that the commission promptly initiate a backup plan in the event that the transporters fail to show up before 8:00 AM on election day.

The stakeholders told the REC to cease assigning blame and to remember that it is the commission’s job to organize successful and credible elections.

In local government areas where there was high insecurity in the state, several wards did not hold presidential/national assembly elections, yet it is believed that results were returned for those communities, sparking a wave of protests over INEC’s results.
