AFCON 2023: A tactical substitution helped us defeat Cote d’Ivoire — Finidi
The Super Eagles defeated Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday at the present Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) thanks to discipline and a tactical shift in formation, according to assistant coach Finidi George.
After a thrilling encounter against the hosts, Finidi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the guys followed orders and played a highly tactical game.
Although we are overjoyed with the win, nothing has been done as of yet.
It was a tactical game in which we frequently had to defend by launching flanking counterattacks. We alternated formations throughout.
He explained, “We had to sit back a bit, close the spaces, and go on counterattacks because (Cote d’Ivoire) is a very good team on the ball.”
The guys will not let their victory get to them; instead, the coach added, they will put in more effort in their upcoming Monday match against Guinea-Bissau.
“We go all out again in the next match; we will maintain our composure because nothing has been accomplished yet,” he declared.
According to NAN, the third and final round of Group A matches will take place on Monday at 5:00 p.m. (local time) at the Stade Félix Houphout Boigny in Abidjan between Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau, who are presently ranked second in the group. (NAN)
