Anambra building collapse: The cause is still unknown – School authority

The Anambra Centenary Celebration Committee of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS, Onitsha, has stated that the cause of the collapse of its five-story Centenary Building is still being investigated.

The school is owned by the Anglican Church. Last week, the structure that was being built to commemorate the school’s 100th anniversary collapsed.

Three people were rescued from the rubble, but one later died. Dr. Chijioke Ojji, director of operations for the school’s centenary celebration, said in a statement that the committee will work with the deceased worker’s family to arrange his burial.

According to Ojji’s statement, the DMGS centenary building collapsed around 1:00 a.m. on June 12, 2024. Unfortunately, three people became trapped, and despite rescue efforts, the third person, Gideon Ezeigwe, was discovered dead.

“We send our condolences to his family, and they have our support as they deal with this tragic loss.

“The cause of the collapse is still unknown and is under investigation by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ASPPB), and the Nigerian Police.”
