Baptist Old Boys: Obasanjo shakes Abeokuta with 100th anniversary 18km walk

Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo led current and former students of Baptist Boys High School (BBHS), Abeokuta on an 18-kilometer walk around the city on Monday as part of the school’s centennial celebrations.

Obasanjo, who was joined on the walk by the National President of the Old Boys Association, Prof. Kayode Oyesiku, and a large number of current students, entertained residents, motorists, and passers-by.

According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, hundreds of residents and enthusiasts echoed and praised Obasanjo’s name for his prowess, energy, and endurance in embarking on the walk despite his age.

Obasanjo and his team were hosted by the Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade, former Finance Minister Onolapo Soleye, and the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo. Some of their old schoolmates joined them for the visit to Alake’s palace.

They walked amid singing of the school anthem among other songs, through Oke Egunya, Igbore, Oke Igbein, and at Omida the palace of Oba Omolade.

The residence was built on the site of a former mill, and it now serves as a park. Following that, the team returned to Ake, the palace of Oba Gbadebo.

Shortly after leaving Alake, the octogenarian, still full of energy, got back on the road and headed for Saje, a journey that took them through Isale Ake, Adatan, and Kugba Road before entering the rehabilitated Saje Road into the school grounds.

Oyesiku revealed that the walk totaled 18 kilometers, and he praised the spirit of the school’s old boys for their participation in the centennial anniversary exercise.
