FG Orders JAMB to Implement an 18-Year Minimum Admission Age for Tertiary Institutions
Candidates under the age of 18 are not eligible for admission to postsecondary institutions, according to the Federal Government.
Mister Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education, issued the directive during the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) 2024 Policy Meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
Although the statement generated mixed emotions from the vice-chancellors, rectors, and registrars in attendance, the minister condemned the acts of some parents who pressure their underage children to enroll in tertiary schools.
According to the minister, the 18-year standard corresponds to the 6-3-3-4 educational system.
Professor Mamman went on to say that for individuals who are unable to acquire entrance to postsecondary institutions, the Ministry of Education is teaching skills to primary school students.
