Hardship: Seun Kuti Tells Nigerians That Protest Is Not Enough
Singer and activist Seun Kuti has urged Nigerians to strive for the genuine change they want to see rather than merely participating in protests.
The nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstration against the nation’s hardships preceded this call.
The musician described protest as “the beginning of the dance” in a chat on Channels Television’s Rubbin Minds program.
I will advise Nigerians that protesting alone is insufficient. I see objections as a child saying, “Oh, daddy, mummy, I don’t want to eat this,” to a caring parent because they are concerned about them. However, these folks don’t give a damn, which is why I advocate mass organization rather than just protest, believing that in order to gain power, we, the people, must also organize ourselves.
“We need to convey signals that we are prepared to replace them, in addition to just demonstrating against what they do.
To govern this nation for our own good, he continued, “not with another version of themselves like we did before, PDP to APC, but with new people, representatives from our side of the divide.”
Kuti called on Nigerians to organize and strive toward freeing their nation from the bonds of capitalism.
“People wanting to protest is not enough. This dance begins with protest. When we start organizing in large numbers to become socialists and free this nation from the current form of capitalism, then is when the true party begins.
