The Kano State Government has approved N99 million for the first phase of an Anti-Rabies Control Programme aimed at protecting residents and improving animal health across the state.
Kano State Commissioner for Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr Aliyu Isah, said the initiative seeks to curb the spread of rabies, a dangerous but preventable disease affecting both animals and humans.
He explained that at least 10,000 dogs will be vaccinated during the first phase of the programme.
Dr Isah described the initiative as an important step in safeguarding lives and promoting better care for animals in Kano State.
The commissioner also revealed that the government plans to conduct a dog census across the state, noting that accurate data on the canine population will enable more effective planning and long-term rabies prevention.
He urged residents to support the programme by presenting their dogs for vaccination and cooperating with the teams assigned to implement the exercise.
