Mourinho’s Fenerbahce is eliminated from the Champions League by Lille.
Lille defeated Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce 3-2 on aggregate on Tuesday, thanks to a Jonathan David penalty in extra time that sealed the team’s spot in the Champions League play-offs.
Fenerbahce appeared to be eliminated after losing the first leg 2-1 last week, but a late own goal by Bafode Diakite forced extra time.
Aissa Mandi, a replacement for Lille, was sent off in his debut for a careless challenge on Irfan Can Kahveci. However, Jayden Oosterwolde’s handball gave the visitors a penalty, which David scored with ease.
The French team managed to hold on and move on to the last qualifying round, where they will take on either Union Saint-Gilloise or Slavia Prague, with Cenk Tosun heading against the bar.
With Fenerbahce’s departure, Mourinho’s tenure as manager has started less than ideally as he attempts to guide the team to its first Turkish championship since 2014.
In two legs, Slovan Bratislava, who qualified via the first round, defeated APOEL Nicosia 2-0.
They will play Midtjylland for a spot in the redesigned 36-team competition after Ferencvaros of Hungary was defeated 3-1 on aggregate by the Danish champions.
Bodo/Glimt, the Norwegian champions, defeated Jagiellonia Bialystok of Poland 4-1 to complete a 5-1 aggregate victory.
Following a 3-3 tie in the second leg held in the Netherlands, Salzburg defeated FC Twente 5-4.
After a 1-1 draw in Poland the previous week, Rangers take on Dynamo Kyiv with the tie still in play.
