Niger: FG Commissions Waterworks Rehabilitation Following Thirty Years of Failure
The reopened New Bussa waterworks in Niger State’s Borgu Local Government Area represents the Federal Government’s continued dedication to attaining Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).
The project’s commissioning secretary, George Akume, stated that the Federal Government (FG) is committed to guaranteeing that every Nigerian has access to clean water and sanitary facilities.
After lying dormant for more than thirty years, the New Bussa waterworks has been revived to supply sustainable water management and enhance the public health.
The town that is home to Nigeria’s largest hydroelectric dam, the Kainji Dam, finds special significance in the project.
The National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission launched the project in 2023 as an intervention effort (N-HYPPADEC). Furthermore, not a drop of water has been supplied to any residence in the expanding New Bussa neighborhood by the project sponsored by the Niger State government for more than 30 years.
The initiative is essential for preventing water-borne infections and enhancing public health in the community, stressed Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, who was speaking at the occasion in place of Minister of State Agriculture and Food Security Sahabi Abdullahi.
The inhabitants of New Bussa were reassured by Abubakar Yelwa, Managing Director and Chief Executive of the National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), that the commission’s commitment to the community does not end with the project’s commissioning.
He disclosed that the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare of the people of New Bussa is evidenced by the water project, which represents a noteworthy investment over ₦2.1 billion.
Sani Haliru-Dantoro, the Emir of Bargu, expressed his excitement visibly and stated that the waterworks’ restoration is recompense for the community’s sacrifices and support of Nigeria’s energy supply.
