Michael Olugbode -Pre-election violence is condemned by the European Union Election Observation Mission

The recent assassination of Chief Oyibo Chukwu, a senatorial candidate for the Labour Party in Nigeria’s Enugu East Senatorial District, and his close friend who was involved in politics has been condemned by the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM).

EU EOM Chief Observer Barry Andrews urged Nigerian authorities to hold those accountable in a press release yesterday.
On election day and in the days that follow as ballots are counted and tabulated and results are announced, he urged all electoral stakeholders to conduct themselves in a way that reflects the spirit of the Peace Accord signed on February 22.

The security agencies are urged to carry out their duties and create a conducive environment for peaceful elections, according to Andrews.
He claimed that the EU EOM had been monitoring the campaigns that had just ended, the actions of political parties and candidates, as well as those of other stakeholders, in the run-up to the general elections on February 25.

The EU EOM will continue to monitor the electoral process, including the openness of election administration, the objectivity of security agencies, and the independence of the judiciary. He advised that any concerns regarding the conduct of the elections or their outcome should be directed through designated election tribunals and courts as provided for by Nigerian law.
