Sports Minister: Let’s Continue to Support Our Athletes at the Olympics
John Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, has mobilized support for the Nigerian athletes who are already competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
In a Thursday post on his X account, he stated, “Our athletes are making us proud by giving it their all. There’s no guilt in falling short against the team ranked #1 in the world, as D’Tigress made the country proud. They had a great performance and left a lasting impression in the quarterfinal encounter, winning 74–88.
They are the first African team to advance to the quarterfinals and have risen four spots in the power rankings. We are pleased with them. Their performances in games have been amazing.
Out of the thirty cyclists competing in the Olympics, just one was African, Ese Ukpeseraye. After 36 years, Uchenna Ogazi qualified for the men’s 400-meter final, and Favour Ofili performed well and displayed remarkable dexterity.
Let’s continue to support our athletes.
The minister emphasised the value of endurance and resolve in the face of difficult circumstances, urging Nigerian athletes to persevere and showcase their skills and tenacity in the authentic spirit of Nigerian sportsmanship.
“We are proud of every athlete who represents Nigeria.” You represent the hopes and dreams of the country, and we will always be by your side as you pursue greatness. Let the world see Nigerians’ tenacity and resolve,” he declared.
His encouraging remarks came after Nigerian competitors suffered defeats on Friday in the track and field competitions.
Team Nigeria will compete in a number of thrilling events in basketball, cycling, wrestling, and athletics despite some losses.
In the men’s 400-meter final, Samuel Ogazi will try to win a medal, while Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, will play the USA in an exciting quarterfinal match.
Oluwatibiloba Amusan is another competitor in the women’s 100-meter hurdles heat 1.
