The ruling comes around ten months after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pronounced Oborevwori the winner of the Delta State governorship race.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed all three appeals to overturn Sheriff Oborevwori’s election as governor of Delta State.

It also dismissed other appeals for lack of merit and confirmed PDP Governor Oborevwori’s victory. The court awards no costs, and the decision is unanimous.

The decision was consistent with that of the lower courts, which determined that the appellants were unable to show the charges of noncompliance included in their petition.

 Oborevwori’s Road to Victory

The ruling comes around ten months after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pronounced Oborevwori the winner of the Delta State governorship race.

He won 36,0234 votes, defeating All Progressives Congress (APC) contender Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who received 24,0229 votes. Kennedy Pela, the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate, finished third with 48,047 votes.

Oborevwori won 21 of the state’s 25 local government units, leaving the APC with just four council areas.

However, his opponents contested the result and filed a petition with the Delta State Election Petitions Tribunal to have it overturned. In September, the three-member tribunal chaired by Justice C.H. Ahuchaogu dismissed the petition filed by former Senate Deputy President Omo-Agege.

The panel determined that the petition contained baseless claims and was devoid of merit and speculative.

Two months later, the Court of Appeal upheld Oborevwori’s victory in the March election.

Following the verdict, the Governor turned to his official X account to express his gratitude to his supporters and Deltans.

“To the glory of God, the Supreme Court today confirmed me as the legitimately elected Governor of Delta State. “I applaud the judiciary, my legal team, supporters, and all Deltans,” the governor wrote.

“Truly, the court is the last chance for average Nigerians. The legal challenges are done; now it is time to continue completely serving the people of Delta State in accordance with my God-given vision, the MORE agenda.”
