Italian media said on Friday that Roberto Baggio, the 1993 Ballon d’Or winner, had stitches put in his head wound after being hit in the head during a break-in while watching Euro 2024 at home with his family.

Five armed persons stormed into the 57-year-old’s home near Vicenza in northeastern Italy on Thursday night while he was watching the defending champions Italy’s 1-0 loss to Spain in Germany on television.

When Baggio was in his peak, he was referred to by his followers as the “Divine Ponytail.” When he attempted to foil the heist, one of the burglars whacked him in the forehead with a rifle butt.

After that, the burglars imprisoned him and his family in a room and looked through the villa for cash and jewelry.

Corriere della Sera reports that the break-in took about forty minutes to complete. Baggio knocked down the door and contacted the police when he was confident the robbers had departed.

After being taken to the hospital, he had sutures put in.

Baggio, who played for Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan and was capped 56 times, won two Serie A championships as well as the 1993 UEFA Cup.

Additionally, he was crucial to Italy’s journey to the 1994 World Cup final.

But the World Cup was lost by the Azzurri due to his missed penalty in the final match against Brazil.
