APC Chairman Holds Emergency Meeting With Members Of Progressive Governors Group On Naira Redesign

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is having an urgent meeting with state governors to discuss the party’s program.

The agenda for the meeting was not entirely clear earlier, but it was learned that the development might not be unrelated to the escalating conflict between President Muhammadu Buhari and some resentful governors over the naira redesign policy, which has caused Nigerians to endure unspeakable hardship in recent weeks.

Senator Adamu’s opening statement, which claimed that recent events called for the invitation he made to the APC governors, furthered the rumor.

The meeting’s purpose, the party chairman underscored, was not to pass judgment on anyone on events in the nation, even when they impact the party in power.

In order for us to have a better knowledge of the scenario we are in, Senator Adamu said, “I thought the best thing to do is to get all those who are holding forth in their separate positions and who were elected on the platform of the party to get together and have some contact.”

 Crisis in policy.
Following the implementation of the redesign policy, there have been violent protests that have resulted in the destruction of bank property and deaths in some states, forcing governors to look for alternative ways to quell the growing storm.

The President’s announcement that the old N1,000 and N500 notes had ceased to be legal tender, contrary to the Supreme Court’s view, intensified the ongoing cash crunch that was attributed to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The president had also instructed the CBN to permit the coexistence of the old N200 note and the new N200 note. Even among APC governors, these instructions did not seem to sit well with many people, who responded in a variety of dissident ways.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State addressed his state’s residents shortly after the president addressed the nation and issued his instructions, claiming the president was mistaken in his assertion regarding the cash swap issue.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and Speaker of the House Femi Gbajabiamila, both members of the APC, backed El-stance Rufai’s and criticized the president’s stance on the issue.
