Enock Mwepu, an ex-Brighton player, is being treated in hospital for ‘precautionary checks’ after collapsing with a suspected heart attack.
Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed that former midfielder Enock Mwepu is being treated in hospital for ‘precautionary checks’ after collapsing with a suspected heart attack.
Mwepu was named Under-9s academy coach by the Seagulls in December, two months after he was forced to retire from professional football at the age of 24 due to a heart condition.
On Sunday, January 15, the club issued a statement ‘in response to media reports’ claiming Mwepu had been rushed to the hospital after collapsing.
‘In response to media reports, the club can provide the following update on Enock Mwepu,’ it said.
‘Enock was taken ill in Zambia and is now undergoing precautionary measures.
‘Our medical team is in contact with the hospital and is ready to assist if needed.
‘The club would like to thank all of those who have sent messages of support.
‘Neither the club nor Enock wish to comment further at this time.’
Mwepu made 27 appearances for Brighton after joining from Red Bull Salzburg in July 2021 for around £18 million.
