‘Gambling addiction’ has been identified in Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford and banned for England, has a gambling problem, according to a study by an independent panel.

Following his admission of 232 betting-related infractions by the Football Association, Toney was given an eight-month penalty.

After a formal hearing, the independent regulatory body issued the penalties, which included a £50,000 ($62,000) punishment.

His comeback to competitive play is scheduled for January of the following year. He is unable to practice with Brentford until September 17.

Toney’s private hearing was attended by psychiatrist Philip Hopley, who determined that the forward suffers from a gambling addiction.

As a result of the decision, the commission’s ultimate decision decreased an 11-month punishment by three months.

The written reasons statement, which was released on Friday, stated that “the commission finds that a significant reduction should be made to reflect the diagnosed gambling addiction identified by Dr Hopley.”

Toney broke the FA’s regulations during the course of five seasons, from 2017 to 2021, while playing for Newcastle, Peterborough, and Brentford, before moving to the latter in 2020.

During the 2017–18 season, the striker put 13 wagers for his own team to lose in seven different games; 11 of those wagers were against Newcastle when he was out on loan from the St. James’ Park club.

Aston Villa and Wigan were the subject of two further wagers, although Toney, who was then on loan at Wigan, was not a member of the matchday squad.

The committee discovered that the England international also placed bets on his own side to win 15 separate games and himself to score in nine different games.

However, the regulatory body determined that match-fixing was not involved in Toney’s case.

“There is no evidence that Mr. Toney did or was even in a position to influence his own team to lose when he placed bets against them winning,” the statement read. He wasn’t on the team or qualified to participate at the time.

In a statement, Brentford expressed their commitment to helping the 27-year-old with his gambling issues.

The team stated, “Ivan and Brentford FC accept that offenses were committed and sanctions were necessary.”

The panel observed that none of the allegations involved situations in which Ivan would have a detrimental influence on his own team. The written justifications include the detail.

The club will now use every effort to help Ivan and his family deal with the problems brought up by this situation.

Toney, who made his England debut in March against Ukraine, has 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances this season.
