If elected president in the upcoming election on February 25, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, has pledged to reorganize Nigeria and lift its citizens out of poverty.

On Monday, he made this statement on The 2023 Verdict on Channels Television.

Restructuring is not something I will implement by presidential decree, according to Obi. We are going to have a conversation and follow the legal procedure while doing that, but I can promise you that we need to restructure. We all own assets that will enable the nation to function; indeed, some who are opposed to restructuring might even stand to gain more.

The former governor of Anambra State said that by boosting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises—the sector is the most productive in any economy—he would help lift people out of poverty.

I always choose the populous nations—China, India, Indonesia—that are held up as models for other nations today.

“This sector fuels the economy of all of them. Therefore, in my opinion, you should read and pay attention to this section since they will advance our goals, and my personal commitment is to help as many people as possible escape measurable poverty, stated Obi.

He claims that previous Nigerian governments have consistently failed to assess the situation before taking office and the state of affairs after doing so.

In 2012, our unemployment rate was between 10 and 12 percent; today, it is 33 to 35 percent. In 2012, there were 55 million people living in financial poverty; today, there are 95 million people living in it. Of fact, there are currently 133 million people living in multifaceted poverty.

Therefore, he said, “These are things you need to say if a new government takes office in 2023. We need to draw a line, this is where we stand, and start implementing those thing you think that can start reversing the situation and reducing things like poverty, unemployment, and inflation in an organized measurable way.”

If elected president on February 25, the Labour Party candidate also pledged to unite the nation and added that doing so required giving everyone a sense of belonging.

When asked what he felt about his opponents who made fun of him for not having a plan to win the election, Obi responded that his plan was the Almighty God and the people of Nigeria.

“When I first started, they claimed it was only four individuals tweeting in a room; now they claim I don’t have the structure or the number; the voters will decide that. The Almighty God is my biggest structure, I added, followed by the Nigerian people, to whom I am begging to construct a new Nigeria—a new Nigeria is feasible, Obi said.
