251 hostages, some of whom were already dead, were taken back into the Gaza Strip by Hamas militants during the biggest attack on Israel in history.

Israel thinks that the 64 individuals who remain in captivity a year later—among them two children—are still alive.

The captives are vital negotiating chips for the Palestinian militant organization that controls the Gaza Strip in order to negotiate a ceasefire with Israel and demand the release of Palestinian inmates detained in Israeli prisons.

This is what we currently know about the hostages that are being held in Gaza.

117 of the 251 hostages the extremists took on October 7, 2023, were released; the majority of these were women, children, and foreign employees.

In late November, 240 Palestinian detainees detained in Israeli jails were exchanged for the majority’s release during a week-long truce.

Thirty-three of the other seventy-two dead have their bodies in Gaza, according to the army.

Though some of the 64 people believed to be alive are multi-national, 57 of them are Israelis. Six more are citizens of Thailand, and one is from Nepal.

Ten are women and fifty-two are men. Eleven of them are active-duty members.

Although Israel has not confirmed it, Hamas has claimed the two children are dead.

– No evidence of life

Only seven other captives have been released alive after the truce broke on December 1st, and those seven were all freed amid Israeli military operations.

It is unclear if the 64 are still alive because there is no evidence of their existence.

On August 12, the armed wing of Hamas announced that two Israeli hostages had been injured and one had been shot dead by its members.

Families are left in heartbreaking uncertainty as a result of Hamas’ repeated announcements of hostage deaths that Israel has not validated.

Six more people were allegedly put to death by Hamas in August, according to the Israeli army: Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobonov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino.

Soldiers discovered them dead in a tunnel in the southern Gazan town of Rafah.

The majority of the captives were captured during the assaults on the Nova music festival and the Nir Oz kibbutz.

Forty of the at least 76 hostages who were captured on October 7 at the Nir Oz kibbutz were freed. Twenty others are thought to still be alive and are in Gaza. The 16 that are left are deceased.

It is believed that just 17 of the festival goers who were kidnapped are still detained in Gaza.

Entire families were transported to Gaza on October 7. The truce in November 2023 relieved them, but it also meant having to say goodbye to loved ones.

French-Israeli children Eitan, Erez and Sahar were freed while their fathers Ohad Yahalomi and Ofer Kalderon are still being detained.
