Nigerians and the international community are assured by INEC of free and fair elections.

Nigerians and the international community have been reassured by the Independent National Electoral Commission that the polls will be free, fair, and credible.

At a Monday meeting at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja with the Commonwealth Election Observation Mission to Nigeria, which is being led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, provided the assurance.

“INEC is aware of the significant advantages of holding credible elections, not just in Nigeria but throughout the continent of Africa.

“We recognize how important the Nigerian election is. The burden of accountability is on us, as I indicated. We are also aware of the advantages of trustworthy elections. It will have a great impact on our sub-region in addition to bringing peace and good administration to our nation.

Yakubu promised, “I want to reassure you that we would never let Nigeria and the international community down.”

The Commonwealth Observation Mission’s contributions to the improvement of Nigeria’s electoral system were also praised by Yakubu.

He claimed that by putting the recommendations in the Commonwealth’s findings on Nigeria’s past elections into practice, Nigeria had greatly profited from them.

“Your prior election observation reports have been helpful to us. Your observation reports have benefited a great number of the advancements made over time.

We take your observations seriously, he added.

He stated that INEC anticipated the mission’s thorough reports on the general elections of 2023.

Mbeki stated earlier that the mission’s purpose in Nigeria was to monitor that nation’s elections and ultimately produce a report.

Mbeki stated his belief that Nigeria would hold successful and credible elections.
